Actor británico. Se tituló en la Universidad de Cambridge, y en 1961 debutó profesionalmente en el teatro. En el festival de Edimburgo de 1969 fue aclamado por sus interpretaciones de Ricardo II y Eduardo II. Fue cofundador de la compañía Actors' Company en 1971, pero se retiró en 1974 para unirse a la Royal Shakespeare Company. Es conocido como un actor versátil y apasionado, y ha interpretado una amplia gama de personajes que abarcan desde el teatro isabelino hasta el contemporáneo. En 1981 obtuvo un premio Tony por
